The placement of the door can have different implications for the people living in a home or structure, even in terms of Feng Shui. Now, not all homes are made the same. There are people who live in stand-alone houses, while there are others who live in condominiums, apartments, and other structures that they share with other families. Because of this, it can be difficult to determine whether or not your door placement is amenable to the smooth flow of energy. More often than not, you’ll have to go through a one-on-one consultation with a Feng Shui expert who can show you the best placement for your door in relation to its environment and the goal that you want for your household.
Now, you’re not the only one worried about the optimum placement of the door in your abode. There are many other modern households with different living situations that come to our experts for advice. Here are some of the most common questions that they have about the door in the structure that they live in:
(1) Dear Uncle Dixer: How important is the front door Feng Shui of the apartment complex versus the front door Feng Shui of the apartment itself?
Answer: The front door to the apartment is of utmost importance to the occupants living in that particular unit. The front door of your home matters more to you than the front door of the building itself. The main door to the whole complex is important for everyone living there. The door that the occupants use to come in and out of the entire structure matters to everyone in the building, not just your family. These two doors have different “Na Qi” (received or taken-in Qi) Mouths.
(2) Dear Uncle Dixer: I live in an apartment unit that has a front door facing North. Now, the apartment building itself has a front door that faces South, which is also in the South area of my home. Given that I’m working with these two doors in mind, which direction do I use to plot my apartment? Should I use my unit’s North-facing apartment door as a reference, or the apartment’s South-facing entrance door?
Answer: Based on the assumption that your primary concern is the flow of qi in your unit, you should use your own apartment to plot your compass calculation. If, however, your primary concern is the flow of the qi within the entire apartment building, then you can use the building entrance to plot your compass calculation. The point of reference you want to use all depends on your primary concern.
There is a Feng Shui rule that says “One item, one Taiji” to guide us in this situation, so it all depends on what you want to look at as an item.
Again, it’s important to remember to determine your area of primary concern first when deciding which door to use as a reference for the decisions that you have to make about the layout of your home or building. If you’re a renter or a private homeowner living in a multi-family residential space and you want to improve the flow of energy in your home, then use your unit’s main door as a reference. If you’re a building manager and you want the qi to flow well throughout the structure, then use the building’s door as the reference for your decisions.
